In 1948 Auburn’s Chair of the School of Art and Architecture, Frank Applebee, purchased 36 paintings from a government auction.  The paintings were formerly on tour with the hopes to show the world progressive American art.  The paintings were not well received at the time and Applebee purchased them for $1,072.  Among these paintings were from artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Jacob Lawrence, Ben Shahn and others.
